Treatment: The treatment status is critical and defines value. Most padparadschas on the market are treated:
Heat Treatment: Common to improve or create the pink-orange hue.
Beryllium Diffusion (“Lattice Diffusion”): Adds an orange layer to create the color; stones must be disclosed as “diffusion-treated.”
“No Heat” natural padparadscha is exceptionally rare and commands astronomical prices.
Body (Clarity/Appearance): Padparadschas are Type II gems, so some inclusions are expected. The finest have high transparency, a vitreous luster, and a soft, blended color with no overtone dominating—a balance between pink (25-50%) and orange (50-75%) without brown or gray modifiers. Origin (classically Sri Lanka, now also Madagascar/Tanzania) significantly influences prestige.
