Amblygonite

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Moderately High – ~3.0 – 3.1. It has a noticeable heft, denser than quartz or topaz.

  • Treatment: Amblygonite is virtually never treated. Its rarity and collector status mean it is sold in its natural state. It is not known to be heated, irradiated, or filled in the gem trade. Synthetic amblygonite is not produced for gem purposes.

  • Body (Clarity/Transparency): Gem-quality material is transparent. It is prized for occurring in very large, clean crystals, allowing for impressive faceted sizes (often 10+ carats). Colors range from colorless and pale yellow to greenish-yellow and pale lilac, often with a vitreous to pearly luster. Its major drawbacks are perfect cleavage in two directions and a brittle tenacity, making it fragile for jewelry and challenging to cut.
