Anatase

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Moderately High – ~3.82 – 3.97. It has a notable heft due to its titanium content.

  • Treatment: Anatase is never treated in the gem market. Its rarity and collector status mean specimens are valued in their natural, unenhanced state. Synthetic anatase (used primarily as a white pigment) is common industrially but not faceted as a gemstone.

  • Body (Clarity/Transparency): Gem-quality Anatase is transparent to translucent. It forms in distinctive, sharp bipyramidal (octahedral-like) crystals. It has perfect cleavage and is very brittle, making cutting extraordinarily difficult and faceted stones extremely rare. The rich, indigo-blue color combined with a diamond-like luster is its most prized feature, though it can also be brown, black, or yellow.
