Ruby

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Standard for Corundum – ~4.00. It has a solid, substantial heft.

  • Treatment: Treatment is extremely common and critical to disclose. Nearly all rubies are treated to improve appearance.

    • Heating: Universal practice to improve color (remove purple/brown) and clarity (dissolve silk). Expected in the market.

    • Fracture Filling: (e.g., with lead glass) Heavily fractures rubies are filled to improve apparent clarity. This requires special care and significantly lowers value.

    • Flux Healing: A high-temperature process to heal fractures with a flux agent. More stable than glass filling.

    • Dyeing & Coating: Applied to low-quality stones (should be disclosed).

    • “No Heat” rubies of fine color and clarity are exceptionally rare and valuable.

  • Body (Clarity/Transparency): Ruby is a Type II gemstone, meaning inclusions are common. The finest stones have high transparency with inclusions that do not compromise brilliance. The ideal “pigeon’s blood” color is a saturated, medium-dark tone with strong red fluorescence, making the color appear to glow from within. Silk inclusions can create a soft, desirable effect but should not cause excessive haziness.
