Treatment: Treatment status is critical to value. The finest Royal Blue sapphires are “No Heat” (untreated), which is extremely rare and commands the highest prices.
Heated (Traditional/”Normal” Heat): The vast majority are heated to improve color and clarity. This is an accepted and permanent treatment if disclosed.
Diffusion-Treated: Should be clearly identified as such, as the color is surface-only.
Clarity Enhanced (Filled): Fracture-filled stones require special care and must be disclosed.
Body (Clarity/Transparency): To achieve the Royal Blue grade, the stone must have high transparency and a vitreous luster. Inclusions should not compromise the evenness of color or brilliance. Fine silks can contribute to velvety appearance, but prominent inclusions or milkiness lower the grade. It must exhibit that deep, electrifying blue in all lighting conditions.
