Algodonite

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Very High – ~8.38. It is exceptionally dense and heavy, characteristic of metallic ore minerals.

  • Treatment: Algodonite is never treated. Specimens are valued in their natural state for mineral collections. Its metallic nature and rarity preclude traditional gem treatments.

  • Body (Clarity/Appearance): Algodonite is opaque with a metallic luster. Its “body” is defined by its fresh color—a distinctive grayish-white to steel-gray, often with a pinkish or yellowish tarnish. It is very brittle, has no cleavage, and forms in massive or granular aggregates. Faceted pieces are extreme rarities and are opaque, flat “table cuts” meant to display the unusual metallic sheen, not brilliance.
