Treatment: Ammolite is almost always treated for stability and enhancement.
Stabilization: The thin, fragile layer is almost always backed with a hard substrate (like shale or synthetic spinel) and capped with a protective clear dome (hardened quartz or spinel) in a “triplet” assembly.
Fracture Filling: Epoxy resins are used to fill natural cracks.
Dyeing/Impregnation: Less common, but can be done to darken the background and intensify color contrast.
Unbacked, solid slabs (“naturals”) are extremely rare and fragile.
Body (Clarity/Appearance): Quality is graded on its Color Range (red/green only vs. full spectrum), Color Shift (how colors change with angle), Brightness, and Pattern (e.g., Flash, Dragon Skin, Ribbon). The base material is opaque. It is very brittle with no cleavage. The finest pieces display a vibrant, sweeping rainbow across the entire surface.
