Andalusite

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Moderately High – ~3.15 – 3.20. It has a solid heft, noticeably heavier than quartz.

  • Treatment: Andalusite is virtually never treated. Its appeal lies in its natural, multi-colored pleochroism. It is not known to be heated, irradiated, or filled in the gem trade. Synthetic andalusite is produced for industrial refractory purposes, not for gemstones.

  • Body (Clarity/Transparency): Gem-quality Andalusite is transparent to translucent. Its defining feature is its trichroism—often showing olive-green, brownish-red, and yellow/green hues when rotated. It has distinct cleavage and a brittle tenacity. Stones are often cut in rectangular or step cuts to best display the striking color zoning from different angles. Clarity is typically eye-clean to moderately included.
