Weight (Specific Gravity): Moderately High – 3.77 – 3.89. It has a substantial heft due to its copper content, feeling heavier than quartz or glass.
Treatment: Azurite is generally not treated in the traditional gem sense. Its color is natural and vibrant. However, it is very frequently stabilized/impregnated with colorless resin or wax to prevent the surface from dulling (it can lose its polish over time) and to protect it from minor humidity. Unstable material can also be reconstructed into blocks.
Body (Clarity/Transparency): Azurite ranges from transparent in fine crystals to opaque in massive forms. It has perfect cleavage in one direction and a brittle tenacity, making it fragile for jewelry. Its rich, royal blue color and vitreous to dull luster are defining features. It is also known to pseudomorph (replace) other minerals, particularly malachite.
