Bloodstone

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Standard for Quartz – ~2.58 – 2.64. It feels similar in heft to most agates and jaspers.

  • Treatment: Bloodstone is generally not treated. The red and green colors are stable and natural. Lower-quality stones may be dyed to intensify the green base or the red spots, and such material should be disclosed. It is also commonly stabilized with resin for carving.

  • Body (Clarity/Transparency): Opaque. It has no transparency. The “body” is defined by its even, deep green plasma base and the contrast, size, and distribution of its red “blood” spots. It has no cleavage, a brittle tenacity, and a vitreous to waxy luster when polished.
