Blue Diamond

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Standard Diamond Density – 3.52. Like all diamonds, it has a high specific gravity for a gemstone, contributing to its notable “heft.”

  • Treatment: Blue diamonds are frequently treated to enhance their color. Common treatments include:

    • HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): Can turn certain grayish or brownish diamonds a more desirable blue.

    • Irradiation + Annealing: Creates or intensifies blue color.

    • Coating: A thin layer of synthetic blue diamond or other material may be applied.

    • Natural, untreated blue diamonds (like the famous Hope Diamond) command the highest premiums and require laboratory certification to confirm origin.

  • Body (Clarity/Transparency): Blue diamonds range from Flawless to Included (I1-I3). The color can sometimes mask inclusions. They possess the supreme adamantine luster and exceptional transparency of diamond, with a perfect octahedral cleavage and the highest possible rating of 10 on the Mohs scale.
