Moonstone

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Light – ~2.56-2.59. It feels relatively light, similar to other feldspars.

  • Treatment: Moonstone is generally not treated for color. However, it is often:

    • Impregnated/Oiled: Colorless oil or resin is used to fill surface-reaching fractures, improving durability and appearance.

    • Coated: Rarely, a blue coating may be applied to enhance the adularescence.

    • Backed: May be set with a dark backing to intensify the sheen’s visibility.

  • Body (Clarity/Appearance): Moonstone is translucent to semi-transparent. Its body color is typically colorless, white, peach, or gray. Quality is judged by the strength and color of the adularescence (blue sheen is most valued), the transparency of the body, and the absence of distracting inclusions or cracks. It has perfect cleavage, is brittle, and is best suited for protective jewelry settings.
