Yellow Sapphire

Key Properties:

  • Weight (Specific Gravity): Standard for Corundum – ~4.00. It has a solid, premium heft.

  • Treatment: Treatment is extremely common and a key value factor.

    • Heat Treatment: Standard practice to remove brownish tones and produce a pure, vibrant yellow. Most commercial yellow sapphires are heated.

    • Beryllium Diffusion: Used to create intense “golden” yellow or orange-yellow colors, especially in paler stones. Must be disclosed.

    • “No Heat” stones with fine natural color are rare and command a significant premium.

  • Body (Clarity/Transparency): Yellow sapphires are typically Type II gems, meaning some inclusions are common. The finest stones are transparent with an eye-clean appearance and a vitreous luster. The most desired color is a saturated, buttery or canary yellow without green or brown overtones. Good cutting is essential to avoid a washed-out or dark appearance.
